Murmuration Malta Ltd is our company in Valletta. Since 2020, Murmuration has been working with the Malta Tourism Authority to measure, anticipate and manage tourism flows in balance with the environment of the Maltese islands.
From Malta, our team builds with the Authority a decision-support system for high-value, quality tourism that stays sustainable over the long term.
Our story with Malta began at the end of 2020, with a first proposal of tourism indicators for the Maltese islands. It led to an environmental and climate observatory built around the UN Sustainable Development Goals: air, vegetation, water, urbanisation, climate projections and sea level rise.
Year after year, the partnership has grown into a full set of tools, now carried locally by Murmuration Malta Ltd.
The lack of precise quantitative and qualitative data on the effects of tourism on sustainability hinders the decision-making of public and private stakeholders.
With the Malta Tourism Authority, we have built dashboards on land, water and climate, sea level rise and coastal erosion, heat islands and access to green spaces, as well as a 5 m land cover map of the islands.
The Tourism Square digital twin scores 9 categories of tourist activities against environmental conditions, Activitips turns them into daily tips, Beacount counts visitor flows in Valletta, and the ECCT measures the environmental carrying capacity of 68 localities and 7 regions.
